Heju: Primitive Collection

The rigor of primary geometry meets the softness of organic modernism. This is the essence of the Primitive collection, designed by Studio Heju for Carocim. Hélène Pinaud and Julien Schwartzmann, the architectural duo behind Heju, have created a series of cement tiles that transcend mere decoration to become true architectural elements. Inspired by tribal art and modernist masters like Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, this collection offers an alphabet of elementary forms. Arches, circles, lines, and waves come together to create floors and walls that tell a story. Choosing Heju cement tiles means choosing a warm minimalism, imbued with texture and color.

Decoding the Primitive collection: a sensitive geometry

The strength of Heju cement tiles lies in their apparent simplicity. The collection is structured around strong motifs that define the space: The Arch: The studio's signature, it evokes passage and refuge. The Circle: A symbol of unity, it brings a touch of feminine softness. The Line: It rhythmically structures the space and plays with perspective. The Wave: It introduces movement and organic forms. These motifs are not static. They are designed to interact with each other, allowing for endless layouts (compositions). You can create vertical totems, graphic rugs, or random friezes. It's a "library of shapes" at your disposal.

A palette of natural and "faded" colors

True to its aesthetic, Studio Heju has developed exclusive shades for this collection, far removed from primary colors. The palette oscillates between natural, soft tones, as if faded by the sun. Among them are Coco (an earthy brown), Fumée (an atmospheric gray), Herbe (a dried green), and Tanne (a leathery ochre). Color is always used in pairs within the patterns, accentuating the interplay of solid and void. These nuances allow Heju cement tiles to integrate elegantly into contemporary interiors, harmonizing with light wood or concrete.

Craftsmanship for a contemporary design

While the design is contemporary, the manufacturing process remains true to the Carocim tradition. Each Heju cement tile is handcrafted in our workshops. It is this artisanal process, using a brass divider and a hydraulic press, that gives the tiles their unique matte and velvety texture. The slight irregularities in the material, far from being flaws, are proof of this handcrafted quality. They bring the added soul and vibrancy that Studio Heju seeks in all its projects: "favoring living materials that develop a patina over time."

Installation tips for the Primitive collection

Heju cement tiles (20x20 cm format, 16 mm thick) are suitable for both floors and walls. To maintain the minimalist aesthetic of the collection, we recommend installation with very thin (1 to 2 mm) light gray or cement-colored grout lines, which will blend seamlessly into the surface. Like all our tiles, they require a water- and oil-repellent treatment after installation to protect them from stains and water, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

Authentic Heju at home

By choosing the Primitive collection, you're not just laying tiles. You're installing an architectural vision. Whether it's for a graphic kitchen backsplash, a welcoming entryway floor, or a soothing bathroom, Heju cement tiles bring that touch of "everyday poetry" so valued by designers.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Heju collection

Who is behind the HEJU studio?

The HEJU studio was born from the meeting between Hélène Pinaud and Julien Schwartzmann, on the benches of the National School of Architecture of Strasbourg. State graduates and valedictorians of their class, they founded HEJU in 2015 and developed a unique universe — at the crossroads of Japan and Scandinavia, where calm, light and the precision of gesture engage in dialogue with the architecture of everyday life.

What is HEJU's aesthetic signature?

HEJU cultivates a style that is both sensitive and architectural: rectilinear lines, clean volumes, and vibrant materials. Each project is born from a search for emotion, a desire to render simplicity poetic. White plays the role of silence, while color, subtle and measured, highlights a form or reveals a texture. This approach, both intuitive and deliberate, also permeates the collection created with CAROCIM.

How did the collaboration between HEJU and CAROCIM come about?

HEJU and CAROCIM share a passion for handcrafted materials, natural light, and the patina of time on surfaces. From this affinity emerged a collection that unites the rigor of architecture with the gentle touch of the hand. The HEJU duo designed serene, graphic patterns, which CAROCIM then crafted using the traditional methods of hand-molded cement tiles.

How does the HEJU x CAROCIM collaboration fit into the philosophy of the house?

Create a tile that is both decorative and structural, an architectural element capable of interacting with light, shadows, and the surrounding materials. The HEJU x CAROCIM patterns explore geometry in its most essential expression: solid and void forms, calm rhythms, and mineral hues. They invite free composition, the creation of surfaces that breathe.

How did HEJU and CAROCIM work together?

The collection is the result of a close dialogue between design and manufacturing. HEJU conceived the shapes, considered the relationships of scale and the compositional balances; CAROCIM contributed its artisanal expertise: creating the dividers, adjusting the pigments, and hand-pressing. Each tile is the result of a meeting between architectural precision and the sensitivity of the hand.
